Stichodactyla spp. (Colored) – Large are captivating marine anemones prized for their vibrant colours and dynamic presence in reef aquariums. These anemones belong to the genus Stichodactyla, known for their large oral discs and symbiotic relationships with clownfish and other marine species.
Care Level: Due to their size and specific requirements, these anemones are recommended for experienced marine aquarists. They require stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Feeding: While Stichodactyla spp. benefit from photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they also require supplemental feeding. Offer meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or finely chopped seafood 1-2 times per week to support optimal health.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: These anemones are generally reef safe but should be kept with caution around corals and other sessile invertebrates due to their potent stinging tentacles. They often host clownfish species, which can add natural behaviour interest to your aquarium.
Placement & Environment: Provide moderate to strong lighting to support their photosynthetic needs, ideally using LED or T5 lighting systems. Moderate water flow is preferred to ensure nutrient exchange without causing tissue damage. Place the anemone on a stable rock or sandy substrate where it can attach securely and expand fully.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to accommodate their size and ensure water quality stability. Regular water changes and monitoring of parameters such as temperature (24-27°C), salinity (1.023-1.025), pH (8.1-8.4), and nitrate levels are essential.
Origin & Size: Origin and maximum size vary within the genus; therefore, conservative husbandry practices are advised. Large specimens can reach up to 30 cm or more in oral disc diameter.
