The Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus) is a popular choice among marine aquarists for its striking yellow body contrasted with bold black facial markings. This species is a peaceful herbivore that plays a valuable role in controlling algae within the aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Foxface Rabbitfish coexists well with most community fish but may display mild territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. It is best kept singly or in a mated pair in a suitably sized tank.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this fish thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and grazing opportunities. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock to support natural grazing behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Foxface Rabbitfish may nip at certain soft corals or clam mantles. Monitor behaviour closely when introduced to reef systems.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and a varied diet to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Additional Notes: The Foxface Rabbitfish possesses venomous spines as a defence mechanism, so handle with care during maintenance.
