Siganus doliatus, commonly called the Foxface Rabbitfish, is a popular choice for marine aquarists seeking a peaceful, algae-eating fish with striking colouration. This medium-sized specimen is well-suited to established aquariums where it can contribute to natural algae control.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Foxface Rabbitfish can coexist with a variety of tank mates including other peaceful fish and invertebrates. It may display mild territorial behaviour but is not aggressive. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Siganus doliatus thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. Maintain stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums: temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 SG.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally safe with corals and invertebrates, the Foxface Rabbitfish may nip at certain soft corals or clam mantles. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires a well-established tank with stable water quality and a varied diet.
Additional Notes: The Foxface Rabbitfish has venomous spines that can cause painful stings if handled improperly. Exercise caution during maintenance.
