The Scorpaenopsis diabolus, or Devil Scorpionfish, is a fascinating and visually impressive species known for its elaborate camouflage and venomous spines. This large scorpionfish is a master of ambush predation, relying on its cryptic appearance to blend seamlessly with rocky or coral environments.
Care Level: This species is recommended for experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements and venomous nature. It is not suitable for beginner hobbyists.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Devil Scorpionfish is generally solitary and territorial. It can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates, which it may view as prey. Compatibility with other tank inhabitants should be carefully considered, favouring larger, robust species that are not easily mistaken for food.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Scorpaenopsis diabolus primarily feeds on live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, crustaceans, and shrimp. Regular feeding with high-quality marine carnivore diets is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample space for this large species to establish territory and exhibit natural behaviours. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock or coral rubble to simulate its natural habitat and provide hiding places.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to replicate reef environments.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically aggressive towards corals, the Devil Scorpionfish may prey on smaller reef fish and invertebrates, so it is not fully reef safe.
Handling: Exercise extreme caution when handling or performing maintenance, as the venomous spines can cause painful injuries.
