The Scatophagus argus, commonly known as the spotted scat or spotted batfish, is a captivating addition to marine aquariums. This medium-sized, tank-bred specimen offers vibrant colours and a distinctive spotted pattern that adds visual interest to your display.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Scatophagus argus can coexist with a variety of similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. However, they may become territorial with conspecifics or smaller fish, so careful selection of tank companions is advised.
Diet: An omnivorous species, the scatfish thrives on a varied diet including algae, plant matter, and meaty foods such as brine shrimp or mysis. Providing a balanced diet supports their health and vibrant coloration.
Tank Requirements: Due to their active swimming behaviour and potential adult size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. They appreciate well-structured aquariums with ample swimming space and hiding spots created by rockwork or artificial décor.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to support their health.
Additional Notes: Being tank-bred, this Scatophagus argus is generally hardier and better adapted to aquarium life than wild-caught specimens. They may occasionally nip at invertebrates, so caution is advised when housing with delicate reef species.
