Sargocentron violaceum, commonly known as the Squirrelfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bright red body and large, reflective eyes adapted for nocturnal activity. This small-sized fish is best suited for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience due to its specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank if multiple individuals are desired.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to align with its nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding spots.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is preferred, with dimmer conditions during the evening to mimic natural nocturnal behaviour.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to simulate natural reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter, as this species is shy and requires hiding places to feel secure.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates and crustaceans. Careful consideration should be given when housing with delicate reef inhabitants.
