Sargocentron caudimaculatum, commonly known as the Small Squirrelfish, is a nocturnal species prized for its vibrant red colouring and distinctive black spot on the tail. This species is native to tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments and is best suited to marine aquarium setups that replicate its natural habitat.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but shy, this squirrelfish is primarily nocturnal and will often seek shelter during daylight hours. It is compatible with a range of other peaceful fish but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. It is considered reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Sargocentron caudimaculatum thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to align with its natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and hiding spots. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock to offer shelter and mimic natural crevices. Moderate water flow and subdued lighting conditions help replicate its preferred environment.
Care Level: Intermediate care level is advised due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Additional Notes: Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential for the health of this species. Avoid housing with overly aggressive tank mates to reduce stress.
