Salmacis spp. are a genus of sea urchins commonly kept in marine aquariums for their algae grazing capabilities and unique appearance. Available in various sizes, these invertebrates are a valuable addition to reef and fish-only marine tanks.
Care and Husbandry: Salmacis spp. require stable water parameters typical of marine reef aquariums. Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and stable pH around 8.1-8.4. Provide moderate water flow to mimic their natural environment without causing stress.
Feeding primarily consists of algae and detritus; however, supplementary feeding with dried seaweed or specialised urchin foods is recommended to ensure optimal health. They are generally peaceful and compatible with most reef-safe species but should be monitored to prevent overgrazing on desirable macroalgae or corals.
Placement within the aquarium should allow access to algae-covered surfaces and hiding spots to reduce stress. Avoid placing near aggressive tank mates or species known to prey on echinoderms.
Due to the genus-level identification, specific origin, maximum size, and minimum tank size recommendations are conservative. A minimum tank size of 75 litres is advised to provide adequate space and stable water conditions.
