Sabellastarte magnifica, commonly known as the magnificent feather duster worm, is a captivating invertebrate native to Cuban waters. This small to medium-sized tubeworm is prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its striking, fan-shaped radioles that extend from a protective tube, creating an elegant display.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended. This species requires stable water parameters and regular feeding to thrive.
Feeding: Sabellastarte magnifica is a filter feeder, relying on planktonic particles and suspended microfauna. Supplement its diet with finely chopped marine foods such as phytoplankton, rotifers, or commercially available liquid invertebrate feeds 2-3 times per week.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: This tubeworm is generally peaceful and reef safe, making it suitable for community reef tanks. It should be housed away from aggressive tankmates that may damage its delicate crown.
Water Flow & Placement: Moderate, gentle water flow is ideal to ensure adequate food delivery without damaging the radioles. Place the worm in a secure location with a stable substrate or rockwork where it can anchor its tube safely.
Lighting: Standard reef aquarium lighting is sufficient as this species does not rely on photosynthesis.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 60 litres is recommended to provide stable water conditions and space for growth.
Origin: Wild-caught from Cuba.
Maximum Size: Typically reaches up to 10 cm in crown diameter.
