Pseudomonacanthus macrurus is an intriguing filefish species prized for its unique appearance and behaviour. This species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized aquarium. Compatible with other peaceful tank mates but avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement diet with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territories. Provide plenty of live rock and crevices for hiding and grazing.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Additional Notes: This species is not commonly tank-bred; wild-caught specimens require careful acclimation. Regular water quality monitoring and a varied diet will promote health and longevity.
