Iniistius pavo is a visually captivating wrasse species prized for its vibrant colours and dynamic swimming behaviour. This species is best suited to marine aquarium hobbyists with some experience, as it requires specific care conditions to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Iniistius pavo is generally semi-aggressive and may show territorial behaviour, especially towards similar-sized or shaped fish. It is recommended to house this wrasse with other robust species while avoiding very small or timid tankmates. Compatibility with reef invertebrates is generally good, but caution is advised as wrasses may occasionally disturb invertebrates.
Diet: This wrasse is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets or flakes. Feeding multiple times daily in small portions is beneficial to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory. The aquarium should have a sandy substrate to allow natural burrowing behaviour, along with ample live rock for hiding and exploration.
Water Parameters and Environment: Stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4 are ideal. Moderate water flow and lighting are suitable, replicating natural reef environments without excessive intensity.
Additional Notes: Iniistius pavo may bury itself in the substrate when stressed or sleeping, so a deep sand bed is essential. Regular monitoring of water quality and a secure aquarium lid are recommended to prevent escape attempts.
