Pseudanthias fasciatus, commonly known as the Bartlett’s Anthias, is a strikingly colourful marine fish prized for its vibrant hues and dynamic swimming behaviour. The male displays particularly vivid colours, making it a standout addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show mild territorial behaviour towards conspecific males. Best kept singly or in harems with one male and multiple females.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and specialised marine pellets or flakes. Frequent small feedings throughout the day are recommended to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.
Reef Safe: Yes. Pseudanthias fasciatus is generally reef safe and does not harm corals or invertebrates.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow replicate their natural reef environment. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Mid to upper water column. Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and resting spots.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches).
Due to their active nature and specific dietary needs, Pseudanthias fasciatus males thrive best in well-maintained, mature reef systems with stable water quality. Regular monitoring and careful acclimation are essential for long-term health.
