Pomacanthus xanthometopon, commonly referred to as the Blueface Angelfish, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its vivid blue facial markings and intricate body patterning. This adult medium specimen is suitable for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. Best kept singly or with robust tank mates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient; avoid excessive brightness to reduce stress.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. This helps reduce stress and allows natural foraging behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region, including areas such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and northern Australia.
Maximum Size: Up to 38 cm (15 inches) in length when fully grown.
This species is not reef safe as it may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates. It is best suited for fish-only or fish-plus-live-rock aquaria.
Regular water changes and stable water quality are essential for maintaining health. Avoid sudden changes in water parameters and provide a balanced diet to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
