Pomacanthus semicirculatus, commonly called the Semicircle Angelfish, is a visually stunning species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This extra large specimen displays vibrant colouration and intricate semicircular patterns that make it a standout addition to any mature marine tank.
Care Level: This species is recommended for advanced hobbyists due to its size and specific care needs. It requires a minimum tank size of 250 litres to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pomacanthus semicirculatus is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It is best housed with other robust fish species and should not be kept with very small or timid tankmates. Avoid keeping multiple angelfish of similar size together unless the tank is exceptionally large.
Diet: This angelfish is omnivorous and benefits from a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. Regular feeding of vegetable matter supports its health and vibrant colours.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While Pomacanthus semicirculatus may nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clams, individual behaviour varies. It is generally not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow and good filtration are essential to support this species’ health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. This angelfish appreciates caves and crevices to retreat to when stressed.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm in length.
