Pomacanthus imperator, known as the Orange Tail Emperor Angelfish, is a visually stunning marine fish that captivates with its bold blue and yellow body contrasted by a bright orange tail. This medium-sized angelfish is a popular choice among advanced marine aquarists due to its striking appearance and dynamic behaviour.
Care Level: This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists. It requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pomacanthus imperator is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It can be kept with other large, robust fish but may not be suitable for peaceful or small tank mates. Avoid housing with other angelfish unless the aquarium is very large.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae. Supplement with sponge-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow are ideal to replicate natural reef environments without stressing the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. This helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in length.
With proper care, Pomacanthus imperator can be a spectacular centrepiece in a mature marine aquarium, offering both beauty and personality.
