Pomacanthus imperator, commonly called the Orange Tail Angelfish, is a spectacular addition to any large marine aquarium. Known for its vivid blue and yellow body contrasted by a bright orange tail, this species is a favourite among experienced marine fish keepers.
Care Level: This species requires an advanced level of care due to its size, dietary needs, and territorial behaviour.
Temperament: Pomacanthus imperator can be semi-aggressive, especially towards conspecifics and smaller, more passive fish. It is best housed singly or with other robust species to avoid conflicts.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, sponges, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its adult size and territorial nature.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs are required.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. This helps reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea and Great Barrier Reef.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 40 cm (16 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, Pomacanthus imperator may nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clam mantles, so caution is advised in reef tanks.
