Pomacanthus asfur, known as the Blue Angelfish, is a captivating marine fish prized for its vivid blue and yellow markings. This small variant is ideal for aquarists with experience in maintaining larger, semi-aggressive angelfish species.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and temperament.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pomacanthus asfur is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It is best housed singly or with other robust fish species. Avoid keeping with very small or timid fish to prevent stress and aggression.
Diet: This species is omnivorous, thriving on a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and high-quality angelfish preparations. Regular feeding of meaty and vegetable matter supports vibrant colouration and health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity around 1.023-1.025 SG.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. Pomacanthus asfur may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, so it is not considered fully reef safe.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 35 cm in captivity.
