The Gray Angelfish (Pomacanthus arcuatus) is a captivating marine fish prized for its elegant appearance and unique colouration. Featuring a predominantly grey body with yellow highlights around the fins and face, this angelfish adds a bold statement to any large marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species is best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining large marine fish.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Gray Angelfish can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. It is recommended to keep this fish singly or as part of a carefully planned community with robust tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. Supplementing with sponge-based foods is beneficial to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended. The aquarium should offer plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity around 1.023-1.025 SG.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not inherently destructive to corals, this angelfish may nip at sessile invertebrates or soft corals. Careful observation is advised when introducing to reef systems.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in captivity.
