Plectorhinchus lessonii, commonly referred to as the Small Sweetlips, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its unique markings and gentle nature. This species is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its size and specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Small Sweetlips can coexist with a variety of other non-aggressive fish species. However, it is advisable to avoid housing it with very small or timid fish, as it may inadvertently outcompete them for food. Compatibility with reef invertebrates is typically good, but caution is advised with very small crustaceans.
Diet: This carnivorous species thrives on a varied diet consisting of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential adult size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. The aquarium should be well-established with stable water parameters, moderate water flow, and plenty of hiding places created by live rock formations.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 specific gravity, and pH between 8.1-8.4. Moderate lighting is sufficient, as this species does not rely heavily on bright light.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring of water quality and a secure lid are essential, as Sweetlips are known to be jumpers. Quarantine new specimens to prevent disease introduction.
