The Platax teira, commonly known as the Longfin Batfish, is a visually captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. This tank-bred small specimen offers hobbyists a peaceful and graceful fish with distinctive elongated fins and a laterally compressed body.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to their size and specific care needs, Platax teira are best suited to experienced marine aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, these batfish can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. They may become shy or stressed if housed with overly aggressive species. Avoid keeping with very small fish that could be seen as prey.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter such as spirulina or marine algae to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to accommodate their potential adult size and swimming needs.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is recommended to mimic their natural reef-edge habitats without causing stress.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, where they have ample swimming space and can be easily observed.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at small invertebrates or delicate corals if underfed or stressed.
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture facilities, ensuring healthier specimens and reduced wild collection impact.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
