Petrochirus diogenes, commonly referred to as the Giant Hermit Crab, is a striking addition to large marine aquariums. This XXXL variant is notable for its substantial size and robust scavenging habits, making it an excellent natural cleaner for detritus and uneaten food.
Care Level: Moderate. While hardy, this species requires stable water parameters and a suitably large tank to thrive.
Diet: Omnivorous scavenger. It will consume leftover food, algae, and detritus, but should be supplemented with meaty foods such as chopped seafood or specialised crustacean pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may compete with other large hermit crabs or crustaceans for shells and territory. Avoid housing with very small or delicate invertebrates, as it may inadvertently cause harm.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While it can be kept in reef tanks, care should be taken as it may disturb sessile invertebrates or small fish. Monitor interactions closely.
Tank Requirements: Minimum 200 litres recommended to accommodate its size and activity level. Provide ample live rock and hiding places, as well as a variety of empty shells for shell exchanges.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and good water quality.
Lighting & Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions without stressing the crab.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm in carapace width, with the shell carried often larger.
