Pavona explanulata is a visually striking large polyp stony (LPS) coral belonging to the Agariciidae family. Known for its plate-like, encrusting growth form and vibrant colours, it adds texture and interest to marine reef aquariums.
Lighting Requirements: This coral thrives under moderate lighting conditions. LED or T5 lighting systems providing a PAR range of approximately 100-200 µmol/m²/s are ideal to support healthy photosynthesis without causing bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is recommended to ensure adequate nutrient delivery and waste removal while preventing tissue damage. Avoid strong direct currents that may stress the coral.
Placement: Position Pavona explanulata on stable rockwork in the middle to lower regions of the aquarium. Ensure sufficient spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as it can extend sweeper tentacles.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals. Regular water parameter monitoring and stable conditions will promote optimal health.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, deriving nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae. Supplementary feeding with planktonic foods or coral-specific liquid supplements can enhance growth.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing to avoid coral warfare. It is generally reef safe but may compete with nearby corals if placed too closely.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef tanks: temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels. Regular calcium and alkalinity supplementation supports skeletal growth.
