Pavona explanulata is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral belonging to the Agariciidae family, prized for its distinctive plate-like growth and textured surface. This small specimen is suitable for marine reef aquariums and offers a unique addition to your coral collection.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant colours and healthy growth. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a PAR range of approximately 100-200 µmol/m²/s are ideal.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is best to ensure adequate nutrient delivery while preventing sediment accumulation on the coral’s surface. Avoid strong direct currents that may cause tissue damage.
Placement: Position Pavona explanulata on stable rockwork in the mid to lower areas of the tank, allowing sufficient space to prevent aggression with neighbouring corals. This species can extend sweeper tentacles, so maintain at least 10cm clearance from other corals.
Care Level: Moderate. This coral requires stable water parameters and consistent maintenance to thrive.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of planktonic foods such as phytoplankton or specialised coral feeds 1-2 times weekly.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals to prevent tissue damage.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring of water quality parameters including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium is essential for skeletal growth. Maintain temperature between 24-27°C and stable salinity around 1.025 SG.
