Parupeneus macronemus, commonly known as the Longbar Goatfish, is a captivating marine fish prized for its distinctive elongated barbels and vibrant colouration. This medium-sized species is a lively addition to larger marine aquariums, offering both visual appeal and interesting behaviour as it forages along the substrate.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably large tank to accommodate its active nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space. Compatible with a variety of peaceful community fish but avoid housing with very small or slow-moving species that may be outcompeted for food.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and substrate for natural foraging behaviour. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is preferred to allow the goatfish to use its barbels effectively.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to maintain water quality and encourage natural activity.
Placement: Mid to bottom levels of the aquarium, where it can forage comfortably. Provide ample hiding spots with live rock formations to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches).
