Parachaetodon ocellatus, commonly known as the Ocellated Butterflyfish, is a medium-sized marine fish prized for its distinctive eye-like spots and elegant swimming behaviour. This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped butterflyfish. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, marine algae, and specialised prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so suitable only for reef tanks with hardy corals or fish-only setups.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure stable water quality and avoid aggressive tank mates.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Approximately 15 cm (6 inches).
