The Paracanthurus hepatus (Yellow Belly) is a visually stunning tang species prized for its vibrant blue body contrasted by a distinctive yellow belly. This large specimen is an excellent addition to mature marine aquariums, offering dynamic movement and striking colouration.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for marine algae and vegetable matter. Supplement diet with high-quality marine flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to accommodate active swimming and territorial behaviour.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, providing plenty of open swimming space and hiding spots among live rock.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm in length.
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps. Careful monitoring is advised when introducing to reef tanks.
