Paracanthurus hepatus, commonly known as the Blue Tang or Regal Tang, is a strikingly colourful marine fish popular in reef aquariums. Our stock is tank-bred, ensuring healthier specimens and reduced impact on wild populations.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Blue Tangs require stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding places.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for marine algae and seaweed. Supplement diet with high-quality marine flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) or larger to accommodate their active swimming behaviour and growth.
Lighting Requirements: Standard reef lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed beyond what supports tank flora.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium. Provide ample open swimming space alongside live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Tank-bred specimens sourced from sustainable aquaculture facilities.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safe: Yes, generally safe with corals and invertebrates but may nip at some sessile invertebrates or clam mantles.
Tank-bred Blue Tangs are an excellent choice for marine aquarists seeking a vibrant, active fish with a reduced environmental footprint. Proper care and a suitably sized tank will ensure a healthy and long-lived specimen.
