Panulirus versicolor, commonly known as the Painted Spiny Lobster, is a visually stunning crustacean prized for its vibrant blue, green, and purple hues. This large species is a nocturnal scavenger, making it an intriguing addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped fish, shrimp, and molluscs, supplemented with sinking pellets and algae-based foods. Feeding should be done in the evening to match natural nocturnal activity.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful towards fish and other invertebrates but may prey on small or slow-moving tankmates. Avoid housing with very small or delicate species. Best kept with robust fish and invertebrates.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically aggressive towards corals, it may damage sessile invertebrates or small crustaceans during foraging.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres recommended to provide ample hiding places and roaming space. Provide plenty of live rock caves and crevices for shelter during daylight hours.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
