Panulirus ornatus, known as the Ornate Spiny Lobster, is a spectacular addition to large marine aquariums. Recognisable by its striking colours and long antennae, this species is a favourite among advanced hobbyists seeking a unique invertebrate.
Care Level: This species requires an experienced keeper due to its size and specific needs. A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to provide ample space and hiding places.
Feeding: Panulirus ornatus is omnivorous and primarily scavenges for food. Offer a varied diet including meaty marine foods such as chopped fish, shrimp, molluscs, and specialised crustacean pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night, reflecting their natural nocturnal behaviour.
Compatibility and Temperament: Generally peaceful towards other invertebrates but may become territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or other large predatory species. Suitable tank mates include peaceful fish and reef-safe invertebrates.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Panulirus ornatus may prey on small, slow-moving invertebrates or ornamental shrimp. Monitor interactions closely.
Environment: Provide plenty of live rock and crevices for shelter and moulting. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are essential for health.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable calcium and alkalinity levels.
