Panulirus ornatus, also known as the Ornate Spiny Lobster, is a captivating invertebrate prized for its vivid patterns and robust form. This medium-sized lobster is a fascinating addition to mature marine aquariums, offering both visual appeal and interesting behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Panulirus ornatus requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank environment.
Feeding: This species is omnivorous and primarily nocturnal, feeding on a variety of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, molluscs, and specialised crustacean pellets. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful towards other invertebrates but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Avoid housing with small, slow-moving fish or delicate invertebrates that could be preyed upon.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically aggressive towards corals, Panulirus ornatus may disturb sessile invertebrates or small fish during foraging.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample space and hiding places. Provide plenty of live rock and crevices for shelter, especially for moulting periods.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-28°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm in length.
