Oxycirrhites typus, commonly known as the Hawkfish, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its unique behaviour and striking appearance. Recognisable by its elongated body and distinctive spotted pattern, this species often perches on corals or rocks, surveying its surroundings.
Care Level: Moderate. Hawkfish are hardy but require stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Hawkfish are semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards smaller, more passive fish. They may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp and small crabs, so caution is advised when housing with delicate reef inhabitants. Suitable tank mates include larger, robust fish that can tolerate their assertive nature.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets or flakes to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient space for swimming and territory establishment. The aquarium should be mature with plenty of live rock for perching and hiding.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef compatible, Hawkfish may nip at small ornamental invertebrates and should be introduced carefully into reef systems.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (approximately 4.7 inches).
