Ovula ovum, commonly referred to as the Egg Cowrie, is a visually captivating marine gastropod prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Its smooth, glossy shell and distinctive shape make it a desirable addition to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced due to specialised dietary needs.
Feeding: Ovula ovum primarily feeds on soft corals, particularly leather corals (Sarcophyton spp.) and other related species. It is essential to provide a steady supply of appropriate coral tissue to sustain this cowrie in captivity. Without adequate food, it may starve.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is generally reef safe with caution. While it coexists peacefully with most reef inhabitants, its diet involves consuming certain soft corals, which may limit coral diversity in the aquarium. It is not aggressive but will selectively graze on corals.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water parameters and provide sufficient space for feeding and movement.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Position Ovula ovum near healthy leather corals or other soft corals it can graze upon. Avoid placing it near corals you wish to preserve.
Additional Notes: Due to its specialised diet, this cowrie is best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide consistent feeding and monitor coral health closely. It is not recommended for beginner marine hobbyists.
