Naso vlamingii, commonly known as Vlaming’s Unicorn Tang, is a captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. Recognisable by its elongated body, prominent forehead bump, and striking colouration, this tang is a favourite among experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a mature aquarium setup.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and specialised herbivore pellets or flakes. Supplement with occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) or larger to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and adult size.
Reef Safety: Yes. Compatible with reef tanks, but may nip at certain soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with stable parameters.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming space along with live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
