Naso vlamingii, commonly referred to as the Naso Tang or Vlaming’s Unicornfish, is a captivating species prized for its elegant shape and striking colouration. This medium-sized tang is a herbivore that thrives in well-established, spacious marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spots.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and specialised herbivore pellets or flakes. Supplement with occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and growth.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Naso vlamingii may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate to strong water flow mimics natural reef currents and supports healthy algae growth for grazing.
Placement: Mid to upper water column. Provide open swimming areas alongside live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
Due to its size and care requirements, the Naso vlamingii is best suited for experienced hobbyists with large, mature marine aquariums. Regular water quality monitoring and a balanced diet will ensure a healthy, vibrant fish.
