Naso brachycentron, commonly referred to as the Banded Unicornfish, is a visually stunning tang species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This large fish features a distinctive banded pattern across its body and a characteristic short horn on its forehead, making it a captivating centrepiece for suitably sized tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spots and swimming room. Compatible with most other peaceful marine fish.
Diet: Herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets. Occasional meaty treats can be offered but should not dominate the diet.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and adult size, which can reach up to 40 cm. Provide strong water flow and excellent filtration to maintain pristine water quality.
Lighting and Placement: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Place in open swimming areas with access to live rock for grazing.
Reef Safety: With caution. Generally safe with corals but may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Adding a Naso brachycentron to your marine aquarium offers a blend of beauty and dynamic movement, ideal for hobbyists prepared to meet its care demands.
