Myripristis amaena is a visually impressive squirrelfish species prized for its bright red hues and distinctive large eyes adapted for nocturnal activity. This large variant can grow to a considerable size, making it suitable for spacious marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but shy, Myripristis amaena is best kept with non-aggressive tank mates. It is nocturnal, often hiding during daylight hours, so providing ample rockwork and caves is essential. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species that may stress this fish.
Diet: This species is carnivorous, feeding primarily on small crustaceans, plankton, and meaty marine foods. Offer a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. The aquarium should have plenty of hiding places and moderate water flow to mimic its natural reef environment.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and good water quality with regular filtration and water changes.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is preferred to accommodate its nocturnal habits. Position rockwork and caves to provide shaded retreat areas.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, Myripristis amaena may prey on small invertebrates and should be monitored in reef setups.
