Myrichthys maculosus, commonly referred to as the Tiger Tail Moray Eel, is a visually stunning addition to a mature marine aquarium. Known for its distinctive spotted pattern and elongated body, this eel is a fascinating species for experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a secure tank environment due to its size and behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive. It can coexist with larger, robust tank mates but may prey on smaller fish and invertebrates. Careful selection of tank companions is essential.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped fish, squid, shrimp, and specialised frozen marine preparations. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night when the eel is most active.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended for smaller specimens, with larger individuals requiring significantly more space to accommodate their active nature and growth.
Tank Setup and Husbandry: Provide ample hiding places using live rock or PVC pipes to mimic natural crevices. Ensure the aquarium has a tight-fitting lid as moray eels are known escape artists. Maintain stable water parameters with good filtration and moderate water flow.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions without stressing the eel.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 1 metre in length in captivity.
