The California Smoothhound Shark (Mustelus californicus) is a fascinating species native to the eastern Pacific Ocean, known for its slender body and smooth skin texture. This species can grow to a considerable size, making it suitable only for large, well-established marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the California Smoothhound Shark is best kept with other large, non-aggressive fish. It is not reef safe and should not be housed with small or delicate species due to its size and natural behaviour.
Diet: This shark is carnivorous, feeding primarily on crustaceans, molluscs, and small fish in the wild. In captivity, a varied diet of fresh or frozen seafood such as shrimp, squid, and fish fillets is recommended to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its large adult size, a minimum tank size of 1000 litres is advised, with ample swimming space and a secure lid. The tank should have a sandy substrate to mimic its natural environment and provide comfort.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 22-26°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and excellent water quality. Moderate water flow is preferred, replicating coastal habitats.
Care Level: Advanced. This species requires dedicated care, a large tank, and experienced handling.
