Monocentris japonica, commonly known as the Japanese Pineapplefish, is a fascinating nocturnal species renowned for its striking armour-like scales and bioluminescent organs. This fish is a peaceful addition to a marine aquarium, best suited for hobbyists with some experience due to its specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Monocentris japonica is generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or large predatory species to prevent stress or injury.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and primarily feeds on small crustaceans and planktonic organisms in the wild. In captivity, it accepts a diet of frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to match its natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should have plenty of hiding places such as caves or rockwork to mimic its natural environment and reduce stress.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is ideal, and lighting should be subdued or dim to accommodate its nocturnal nature.
Origin: Native to the coastal waters of Japan and surrounding regions.
