The Indian Triggerfish (Melichthys indicus) is a captivating large triggerfish species prized for its distinctive shape and vibrant colours. Native to tropical Indo-Pacific waters, this fish is a bold addition to a suitably sized marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Indian Triggerfish are known for their territorial and sometimes aggressive behaviour, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. They are best kept with robust, similarly sized fish and are generally not reef safe due to their tendency to nip at invertebrates and corals.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets or flakes to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. Strong water flow and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Lighting and Placement: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Place the Indian Triggerfish in a tank with plenty of live rock for hiding and territory establishment.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
