Meiacanthus nigrolineatus, commonly known as the black-lined fangblenny, is a popular choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a peaceful and hardy blenny. This species is tank-bred, ensuring better acclimation to captive conditions and reducing wild collection impact.
These blennies are known for their distinctive black lateral line and venomous fangs used primarily for defence. Despite this, they are generally peaceful and can coexist well with other non-aggressive tank mates. Their venom poses no significant threat to humans or other fish when housed appropriately.
Care and Husbandry: Meiacanthus nigrolineatus thrives in well-established marine aquariums with stable water parameters. A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. They prefer moderate water flow and subdued lighting, mimicking their natural reef habitats.
Diet should be varied and include high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with marine flake or pellet foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Compatibility is generally good with peaceful community fish; however, avoid housing with large aggressive species or other territorial blennies to prevent stress or injury.
Being reef safe, Meiacanthus nigrolineatus can be kept in reef aquariums without risk to corals or invertebrates.
