The Lutjanus gibbus, or Humpback Snapper, is a striking marine fish recognised by its prominent hump and bold markings. This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its size and active nature.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. The Humpback Snapper requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can coexist with other robust fish but may show territorial behaviour, especially in confined spaces.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as frozen or live crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised carnivore pellets.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to their potential size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 500 litres is advised to provide ample space.
Reef Safety: No. This species is not considered reef safe as it may prey on smaller fish and invertebrates.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of swimming space with some rockwork or caves for shelter. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 50 cm in length.
