The Lutjanus bohar, commonly known as the Red Snapper, is a striking and robust predatory fish native to the Indo-Pacific region. This extra large specimen is suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its size and temperament.
Care Level: Advanced. This species requires a large, well-established aquarium with stable water parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Lutjanus bohar is known for its territorial and predatory nature. It is generally incompatible with smaller or more peaceful tank mates as it may view them as prey. Suitable tank mates include other large, robust fish capable of cohabiting with a dominant snapper.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as fish fillets, crustaceans, and specialised marine carnivore pellets. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its potential to reach a large size (up to 90 cm in the wild), a minimum tank volume of 1000 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and reduce stress.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with efficient filtration and regular maintenance.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places with rockwork and open swimming areas. Position the fish in a prominent area where it can establish territory.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm in the wild; aquarium specimens may be smaller but still require large tanks.
