Lactoria cornuta, commonly known as the Longhorn Cowfish, is a fascinating and visually striking boxfish species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Recognisable by its prominent horn-like extensions above the eyes and tail, this species adds a unique aesthetic to mature reef or fish-only marine tanks.
Care Level: Due to its specialised diet and sensitivity to water quality, the Longhorn Cowfish is recommended for advanced hobbyists with experience in maintaining stable marine environments.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be shy and slow-moving. It may release toxins if stressed or threatened, which can be harmful to other tank inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive or fin-nipping species. Compatible with other peaceful fish and invertebrates, but caution is advised.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with algae-based foods to ensure balanced nutrition. Feed small amounts multiple times daily.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended for a tiny specimen, with ample swimming space and hiding spots. Provide a well-established tank with stable water parameters and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Longhorn Cowfish may nip at small sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitor behaviour closely.
Additional Notes: This species is sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes in environment. Regular water testing and maintenance are essential to prevent stress and disease.
