The Lactoria cornuta, or Longhorn Cowfish, is a distinctive and visually captivating boxfish species recognised by its prominent horn-like extensions on the head and tail. This medium-sized fish is best suited for experienced marine aquarium keepers due to its specific care needs and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be shy and may release toxins when stressed, which can be harmful to other tank inhabitants. It is advisable to keep them with non-aggressive, robust tank mates and avoid housing with small or delicate species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity 1.020-1.025.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Longhorn Cowfish may nip at invertebrates or corals, and its toxin release poses a risk in reef systems.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium, with plenty of open swimming space and hiding spots created by live rock.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in captivity.
Due to their sensitivity and potential toxin release, it is crucial to maintain excellent water quality and avoid sudden environmental changes. Quarantine new specimens and monitor closely for signs of stress or illness.
