Hypoplectrus nigricans, commonly known as the Black Hamlet, is a captivating marine grouper species prized for its striking dark coloration and unique behaviour. This medium to large fish is best suited to experienced marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its specific care requirements and temperament.
Care Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Hypoplectrus nigricans can be territorial and somewhat aggressive, especially towards similar-sized or smaller fish. It is recommended to keep them with robust tank mates that can tolerate their assertive nature. Avoid housing with very small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet consisting of high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is ideal to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territories. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for hiding and ambush points.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not strictly reef safe, Hypoplectrus nigricans may coexist in a reef setup if smaller invertebrates and very small fish are not present, as it may prey on them.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Approximately 15 cm (6 inches).
