Hypoplectrus guttavarius is a captivating species of marine grouper prized for its distinctive spotted appearance and moderate size, making it a fascinating addition to larger marine aquariums. Native to tropical reef environments, this fish exhibits a calm yet territorial temperament, requiring careful consideration when selecting tank mates.
In captivity, Hypoplectrus guttavarius thrives best in well-established marine tanks with a minimum volume of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming and territorial behaviour. Providing ample hiding spaces with live rock formations helps reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Diet should consist of a varied selection of meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with high-quality marine pellets to ensure balanced nutrition. Feeding multiple times a day in small portions is recommended to mimic natural feeding habits.
Water parameters should be maintained within stable marine conditions: temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to replicate natural reef currents. Lighting requirements are standard for marine fish and do not require specialised setups.
Due to its territorial nature, Hypoplectrus guttavarius is best kept singly or with other robust species that can tolerate its temperament. It is generally not reef safe as it may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish.
