The Holacanthus tricolor, commonly known as the Three-Colour Angelfish, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its vivid blue, yellow, and black markings. This large angelfish species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its territorial nature and specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Three-Colour Angelfish is semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. It is recommended to keep this fish either singly or as part of a carefully planned community with robust tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish.
Diet: This species is omnivorous and benefits from a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae. Supplementing with sponge-based foods is beneficial to mimic their natural diet.
Tank Requirements: Due to its large size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow and good filtration are essential to keep water quality high.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not strictly reef safe, the Three-Colour Angelfish may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, so it is best kept in fish-only or fish-dominant mixed reef systems.
