Hippocampus reidi, commonly known as the Orangish Seahorse, is a captivating addition to marine aquariums. These tank-bred specimens come in various sizes, making them suitable for hobbyists with different levels of experience and tank capacities.
Care Level: Moderate. Seahorses require stable water conditions and specialised feeding routines.
Temperament: Peaceful and slow-moving, Hippocampus reidi is compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Primarily carnivorous, feeding on live or frozen mysis shrimp and other small crustaceans. Frequent feeding is necessary due to their high metabolism.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and stable water parameters. Gentle water flow is essential to prevent stress and injury.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, care should be taken with aggressive or fast-moving tank mates that may outcompete or harass seahorses.
Placement: Provide plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae, seagrass, or specialised aquarium décor to allow the seahorses to anchor themselves.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle water flow are ideal to mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress.
Tank-bred Hippocampus reidi are a sustainable choice, reducing pressure on wild populations and offering better acclimation to aquarium life.
