Hippocampus kuda (Reddish) are captivating tank-bred seahorses prized for their distinctive reddish hues and graceful swimming. Suitable for experienced marine aquarists, these seahorses require dedicated care and stable aquarium conditions.
Care Level
Moderate to advanced. Seahorses demand consistent water quality and specialised feeding routines.
Temperament and Compatibility
Generally peaceful and slow-moving, Hippocampus kuda can coexist with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid fast or aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food or cause stress.
Diet
Primarily carnivorous, feeding on live or frozen mysis shrimp and other suitable small crustaceans. Regular feeding multiple times daily is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size
A minimum of 75 litres is advised to provide adequate swimming space and stable water parameters.
Lighting and Water Flow
Moderate lighting is sufficient. Water flow should be gentle to moderate, mimicking their natural calm lagoon habitats and preventing stress.
Placement
Provide plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae, seagrass, or specialised décor to allow seahorses to anchor themselves.
Origin and Size
Tank-bred specimens, originally native to Indo-Pacific regions. Maximum size typically reaches around 15 cm.
Additional Notes
Tank-bred Hippocampus kuda are preferred for aquarium keeping due to better adaptation to captive conditions and reduced impact on wild populations.
